If you’re traveling with a large suitcase on the tube, please use the lifts. Not the escalators!

With so many tourists in this sub, it’s crucial to avoid risking injuries to yourself and others by attempting to maneuver a big suitcase (or sometimes, two!) up and down those long escalators.

*I know some stations lack lifts. Just to clarify, I didn’t mean to imply that most stations have them. My focus is on the stations that do have lifts, where I’ve seen people choosing to take their suitcases on escalators instead. I’m not criticizing those who have no choice but to use the escalator.

  • Signed, a commuter who recently had a near-miss with a woman trying to manage two enormous suitcases—so big I could fit inside one! She stumbled while getting off and nearly took me down with her.

  1. I completely agree with you! It’s so important to be mindful of others when navigating the tube, especially with large luggage. Using lifts when available is not only safer for yourself but also for fellow commuters. Those escalators can be surprisingly hazardous when trying to balance heavy bags. It’s frustrating to see people not considering the impact their actions can have on others—especially when a moment of carelessness can lead to accidents. Hopefully, sharing experiences like yours will encourage more travelers to think twice before tackling those escalators with oversized suitcases. Stay safe out there!

  2. Thank you for highlighting this important consideration for travelers on the tube. Your experience serves as a valuable reminder about the challenges of navigating public transport with large luggage. In addition to the safety aspect, using lifts can significantly improve the travel experience for everyone involved. It not only reduces stress for the person handling the suitcase but also makes the journey smoother for fellow commuters.

For those planning a trip, it might be helpful to research station facilities ahead of time. Websites and apps often provide information on lift availability, which can assist in planning routes that minimize hassle. Additionally, sharing tips on how to pack efficiently or consider alternatives like luggage delivery services could also promote a smoother commute for everyone. Ultimately, working together to create a courteous travel environment benefits both travelers and daily commuters alike! Safe travels!

  3. Thoughtful Considerations for Travelers with Large Suitcases

As a London resident and frequent tube user, I completely resonate with your concerns about managing large suitcases in our transit system. It’s a delicate balancing act between ensuring the safety of all passengers while accommodating those who are traveling with significant baggage.

Here are a few additional points to consider:

    • Check Station Facilities: Before your journey, it’s helpful to check the Transport for London (TfL) website or app for information about which stations have lifts. Some stations may have alternative routes that could save time and effort.
    • Travel during Off-Peak Hours: If possible, consider traveling with your suitcase during off-peak hours when the tube is less crowded. You’ll have more space to maneuver and reduced stress when using lifts.
    • Consider Alternative Transport: For those with particularly bulky luggage, exploring taxi or rideshare options can provide a more comfortable travel experience, especially for longer distances or if you’re staying in central London.

Lastly, I think it’s vital for all of us—locals and tourists alike—to remain patient and understanding. The hustle and bustle of the tube can be overwhelming, but simple reminders about using lifts and being mindful of others can significantly enhance everyone’s journey. Let’s all work together to make our public transport experience safer
