Why London Has Captured My Heart: A Love Letter from a Canadian Expat

As a Canadian who relocated to London over two years ago for my PhD, I’ve found myself captivated by this vibrant city in ways I never anticipated. While I initially planned to stay only for the duration of my studies, the allure of life in London has inspired me to consider extending my stay on a graduate visa.

From the moment I arrived, I was struck by London’s unique blend of beauty and imperfections. In the early days when I had yet to make friends, I spent my weekends exploring the city on my road bike. Each ride revealed something new—be it a hidden park, an intriguing neighborhood, or the rich tapestry of diverse cultures that characterize each area. It’s this variety, the ever-changing “vibes” around every corner, that makes London unlike any other place I’ve known.

Yes, the city has its flaws, but there’s a quirky charm even in its imperfections. The pulse of London’s cultural scene—from the dazzling performances in the West End to intimate gigs and improv shows—never fails to amaze me. I’ve immersed myself in local activities like wild swimming, running in Hampstead Heath, and cycling through scenic routes, finding joy in vegan dining, vast parks, captivating street art, and historic landmarks. The abundance of free museums and enchanting bookshops, the iconic Barbican, the trusty tube, and the city’s architectural wonders—it all combines to create an experience that feels uniquely mine.

Over time, I’ve built cherished friendships and joined various clubs, which have enriched my life here tremendously. Surprisingly, the notorious London weather often suits my outdoor pursuits, allowing me to cycle throughout the year. Despite living on a student budget, I’ve managed to explore much of the UK by train, only strengthening my admiration for this remarkable island.

However, when I express my affection for London, I often face skepticism. Many can’t fathom why I’d choose to put down roots here, often citing other European locales as superior. While such comments can cast doubt on my decision, I’m taking care to listen to my own heart. I want to make sure staying in London is genuinely what feels right for me, beyond just being the first European city I’ve called home.
